It all began, of course in 1915, when Kiwanis International was founded. They had trouble in the early years deciding whether they were some sort of commercial "back-scratching" club, or whether the goals and aims of Kiwanis were something greater. In 1922, a group of men in San Bernardino, who had organized under the banner of The Progressive Club, were going through the same debate. A great opportunity came along and under the sponsorship of the Riverside Club, they came as a group into Kiwanis, Forming the Kiwanis Club of San Bernardino on August 30,1922, with Raymond Hodge as our charter President. They wholeheartedly embraced the Kiwanis International Motto, "We Build" and have been building ever since.
The club began with just 53 members and has grown to over 150 and has a current membership of 66. Over the years, the club has provided many community services, including an annual high school basketball tournament during the holidays, providing annual scholarship awards to four local high school students, annual tree planting under the reforestation project initiated by Jerry Stoops and many other events. We also help out in the community in a variety of other ways, including sponsoring youth groups, blood drives, KVCR TV pledge drive phone volunteers, Salvation Army Bell Ringer's as well as raising money to benefit children and children's support groups, and as mentioned, providing scholarships. The club has enjoyed a rich history over the years, with its members coming from fields like accounting, civil service, education, management, and many more.
