History:
Kiwanis' theme is "Serving the Children of the World". Our Sequim-Dungeness Kiwanis Club supports children in the Sequim area in many ways:
- We work with the Sequim School librarians to provide a take home book each year for every elementary school student in the district. Last year we gave away over 1200 books for this project.
- We donate time and money to the Sequim First Teacher Program.
- We donate time and money to the Sequim Boys and Girls Club.
- Bikes are accepted from local donors and cleaned up for distribution for children in the local community. The charities to whom we offer bikes include (a) Clallam County Healthy Families (b) Clallam County Foster Families (c) The Sequim Food Bank (d) Sequim Community Aid (e) Sequim First Teacher Program and (f) Sequim Schools.
- We donate time and money to several local organizations including: (a) Sequim Senior Center (b) Friends of the Sequim Library (c) Friends of the Field and (d) Olympic Theater Arts.
- Each year we offer scholarships to deserving students at Sequim High School. We also offer small scholarships for other activities from our Sequim Kiwanis Scholarship Foundation.
- We conduct an annual Poetry Contest for students at the Sequim Middle School.
- Money is also given to the Kiwanis worldwide effort to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorder.
Our most significant project is working with other Kiwanis Clubs on the Olympic Peninsula to maintain our Northwest Kiwanis Camp. This camp is operated each summer for people with Special Needs. We dedicate a major portion of our fund raising to this effort.
Our club was chartered in 1972 and has a long record of community service. We were part of the effort to establish the Sequim Aquatic and Recreation Center, built a gazebo at Sequim's Cary Blake Park and continue to provide needed support to community charities.
Our primary fund raising activity includes an annual Christmas Tree sale and the display of bunting around the community on different holidays. All funds received from the community are returned to the community through our service projects.
