Established in 1920, the League of Women Voters is a highly respected citizens' organization that researches issues from many points of view and takes action on issues affecting our families and communities. Our members are men and women who want to make a difference.

- The League is nonpartisan; we do not support or oppose candidates
- The League does take a stand on critical issues
- The League works to inform and mobilize people to vote and to take action
- Membership is open to all citizens of voting age - women and men - young and old

Every national League position is based on nationwide study and consensus among members. In the consensus process, members draw on balanced pro/con materials. Once a position is reached, the League marshals all of its tools to influence the shape of public policy.

The LWV has been active in Nevada since 1948 when the Reno League was formed as a provisional organization. In the early 50s, they were joined by Carson City, Elko, Ely, Lovelock, Wells, and Winnemucca. In 1958 the local leagues were incorporated under a new state organization which allowed them to petition for full status. Although some of those organizations have disappeared in Northern Nevada, the Northern Nevada League still has members in Carson City and Reno.
 
The League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada (LWVNN) is a local league that is an integral part of the League of Women Voters of Nevada (LWVNV) and the League of Women Voters of the United States of America (LWVUS).
