In January of 1988, Lenexa Baptist Church met in the Christa McAuliffe Elementary School in Lenexa for its first service, as a mission church sponsored by Emmanuel Baptist Church in Overland Park. Led by Dr. Carl Garrett, then pastor of Emmanuel Baptist, it was initially named Westside Baptist Church.
On January 21, 1990 the church voted to call the first pastor, Steve Dighton, who had been serving at First Baptist Church in Piedmont, Oklahoma. Pastor Steve began his ministry here on February 26, 1990.
The church met in several different temporary locations in Shawnee and Lenexa from 1988 to 1994. However, in October of 1994 the Lord provided a place that the congregation could call their own, a refurbished office building turned church located at 8865 Bourgade in Lenexa, a part of the Loiret Development that had previously gone bankrupt.
The new church home was formally dedicated on Sunday, November 6, 1994. The church grew consistently in this new home, always with the vision of moving to a more permanent home just across 87th Street, where 11 acres had been purchased in 1993, just west of Lackman Road.
On Easter Sunday of 1999 the church met to break ground on the first phase or our current facility. On March 25, 2001, the church moved into the new building on 87th Street Parkway.
Steve Dighton, the founding pastor, has led our church for 18 years, and currently serves as the President of the Kansas-Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists. Under Pastor Dighton's leadership the church has grown from and an average of 100 to 2000 in attendance.
In 2005, Lenexa Baptist Church was named by Lifeway President, Dr. Thom Ranier as one of only 13 "Breakout Churches" in America. In his latest book, Breakout Churches, Dr. Ranier recognizes 13 elite churches that have moved to greatness, and Lenexa Baptist was one of only two Baptist churches recognized for this accomplishment.
In January 2007, Lenexa Baptist Church as also been recognized by Lifeway Research as one of nineteen Standout Churches in the Southern Baptist Convention. This survey was a 10-year study on effective evangelistic Churches.
Lenexa Baptist Church ranked number one in Cooperative Program giving in 2004-2005 in the state of Kansas. LBC also had 100 people from the congregation participating in foreign mission trips in 2005 and 2006.
Lenexa Baptist Church is beginning phase three of our Lenexa campus by building a 1200 seat worship center which will be complete in spring of 2009.
The vision for Lenexa Baptist Church is to become the conservative flagship church in Johnson County as we preach Jesus Christ for the purpose of transforming lives.
