About Macktown Living History

The Winnebago County Forest Preserve District, which owns the land on which Macktown and the trading post once sat, and the Macktown Living History Education Center have undertaken plans to restore Macktown to its 1830 - 1846 historic condition using a master plan by Sheaffer Land Architects. Plans include archaeological excavations; construction of an interpretive education and visitor center; reconstruction of the Hayes Tavern, the Mack Store, Stephen's school and furniture shop, and other historic buildings.

There will be a reconstruction of the historic state road; restoration of the prairie, oak savanna, and other historic landscapes; construction of a ferry and skiff landing; and necessary alterations to the Macktown golf course.

The project has an estimated cost of $2.5 million. Your generous contributions will help us to fulfill our plans to make this Illinois' premier living history site. With your help, we will be able to celebrate our history, and restore this historical treasure for the education and enjoyment of our future generations.
