The mission of the Coalition is to raise community awareness concerning the problems related to low-level reading skills; to train adult volunteers to be reading tutors; to assess the needs of individuals who seek MCLC services; to provide the same support to those who do not primarily speak or read English; and to make tutor - learner matches. By doing so, individuals who seek our services have the opportunity to gain the skills needed to read at a level necessary to function within their work, education, and social environments. According to the National Institute for Literacy's, The State of Literacy in America, 19% of the adults in Anderson and 17% of the adults in Madison County read at the lowest levels of literacy.
