A K-3 elementary school, Maurice Hawk School was recently named a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education; it also has been selected for recognition in the area of educational technology through THE BEST PRACTICES/STAR PROGRAM, a program sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Education. The theme, “Striving to be a Community of Learners” inspires the staff in promoting collegiality, becoming unified with students in learning, and integrating al subject areas so students and teachers have a more meaningful learning experience. Already a culturally, ethnically, and economically diverse community, Maurice Hawk endeavors to prepare its students to live effectively in a society that will become only more diverse.
One of its overriding goals is to enlighten each student to the richness of cultural diversity and to encourage the student to feel pride in one’s cultural uniqueness. The curriculum emphasizes literacy, language learning, mathematical reasoning, critical thinking, problem solving, and cross-cultural understanding. The hallmark at Maurice Hawk is a nurturing teaching staff that fosters lifelong learning skills for all students.
