Meals on Wheels of the Jamestown Area has been around since 1969, providing hot and cold home-delivered meals each weekday to individuals in its service area. If needed, individuals can get frozen meals to be utilized on weekends - the meals are delivered late in the week, and include instructions on how to reheat on the weekend when needed.
A combination of volunteers and paid delivery drivers on 17 delivery routes make sure each day area seniors get the meals they need. Each year, Meals on Wheels of the Jamestown Area serves more than 140,000 meals in its service area of southern and central Chautauqua County, New York. About 500 different individuals receive meals from Meals on Wheels each month.
In addition to the meals, the Meals on Wheels volunteers and staff help make sure each senior citizen who receives meals each day are safe and secure in their own homes. Meals on Wheels is constantly checking up on its meal recipients - with emergency contacts (usually friends, family, or neighbors) called in case a client is in need of help. 911 is called in case of extreme emergencies.
Meals on Wheels delivers each weekday all year long, with the exception of the following eight holidays:
New Years Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day
Clients can take advantage of a delivered brunch meal for these holidays - the holiday is delivered the day prior along with the individual's regular meal delivery.
The cost per meal is $4.00 per day for the hot, cold, or brunch meal. The hot and cold meal together cost $7.00, while the frozen weekend meals come in boxes of two for a total cost of $8.00 ($4.00 per meal).
