The prime function of the Melbourne Beach Police Department is the preservation of peace and order, the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension of offenders, the protection of persons and property under the laws of the State of Florida, the ordinances of the Town of Melbourne Beach, and the performance of a multitude of tasks relating to public welfare and safety.
Our mission is to promote and maintain an atmosphere of safety and security within our community through highly skilled employees, dedicated to the protection of constitutional guarantees, the maintenance of order, and the safeguarding of life and property. History:
The Melbourne Beach Police Department was created in 1947. In the beginning there was just one Police Officer, Chief Orval Gardenour serving a population of 100 hearty souls. The Chief answered calls for service 24 hours a day driving his 1938 Hudson. Apprehending turtle poachers and helping tourists dig their cars out of the sand was all in a day's work.
As the demand for services increased the department expanded and currently consists of a Chief, a Lieutenant, 2 Sergeants, 6 Officers, 1 Reserve Officers, 1 Administrative Assistant and several civilian volunteers. Melbourne Beach Police Department is a full service law enforcement agency providing service 24/7.
Melbourne Beach is a relatively crime free community. Residents enjoy walks along the Atlantic Ocean shoreline and glorious sunsets from a 650-foot pier over the Indian River Lagoon. A variety of small commercial establishments, community center, post office, one elementary school and three churches, including a 100-year-old community chapel meet the needs of our residents.
