History of the Society
The Society was incorporated in 1938 and for many years displayed its artifacts and memorabilia in the New Hartford Community House (damaged by fire and then taken down in 1947) and in the old New Hartford Library building. It was reactivated in 1972 after being defunct for many years. By 1975, it had prepared a two-room museum in the old Library building and dedicated it to Howell H. Richards, its new President. Over the years, the Society has supported publication of original works by town citizens. Society members worked on the Historic District Commission Study report, published in 1977, and later successfully had sections of Pine Meadow designated as a historic district.
The Society has over 300 members and produces a six-page bi-monthly newsletter. Some board members and volunteers are currently indexing the Society's photo archives and working to contact residents for photos that may not be in the Society's collection. Older residents are being tape-recorded in an effort to preserve the past for future generations.
