Newbern Grammar School can trace its roots back to 1857, when a two story building was erected and named the Newbern Academy. This building was destroyed by fire in 1887, and a new building was erected and named the Union Male and Female Seminary.

In 1889, the school board renamed the school the Newbern City School. Classes continued until it was condemned and a new school was built in 1915. It was located on College Street where part of Newbern Grammar School now stands. The new three story brick school housed grades one through twelve.

When this school was destroyed by fire in 1930, the city decided to build a separate high school and repair the burned out grammar school. The new high school was built on the same property as the grammar school. In 1962, a new building was erected in front of the grammar school and contains five classrooms and a cafeteria.

Newbern Grammar School has a full time principal, a part time assistant principal, and 29 certified teachers. Eight non-certified persons complete the staff.

Newbern Grammar School is located in Newbern, Tennessee, an incorporated city with a population of 2806 people. The school population of 475 students is drawn from the city and the immediate unincorporated county areas surrounding the city. The school zone is a blend of agriculture and industry. The business and industrial climate is conducive to the growth of existing and new industry.

There is a strong sense of pride on the part of the community concerning the school and the public takes a sincere interest in its welfare. The school and industry have formed valuable partnerships which benefit the entire community.
