About Us:
Newberry Elementary School is one of nine elementary schools within the West Shore School District. The West Shore School District encompasses parts of Cumberland and York counties. Newberry is located in the southernmost part of the district, in Northern York County. Our surrounding communities, Etters, Dover and York Haven are in close proximity of Interstate 83 and are within easy commuting distance to Harrisburg, York, Lancaster and Baltimore.
Newberry Elementary School has approximately 340 students with 37 professional staff members, 10 instructional/non-instructional paraprofessionals, 7 support staff, 1 nurse, 1 health room assistant, a secretary, and a principal. All professional and paraprofessional staff participate in staff development activities during the summer and throughout the school year to enhance teaching strategies and techniques for the improvement of student learning. Many staff members possess or are working toward advanced degrees.
Newberry Elementary School provides a curriculum through a district-wide instructional design model. Teachers provide instruction in all curricular areas using Learning Focus School strategies. Students receive a strong foundation in reading, writing, math, science and social studies. Likewise, students receive specialized instruction in art, music, library, and physical education. Beginning in fourth grade, students may elect to participate in orchestra and band. Fifth grade students have the opportunity to expand their musical talent and skills by joining the school chorus. Additionally, all students benefit from participation in a variety of activities including: clubs, Student Council, concerts, school spirit days, and community service programs such as Junior Achievement.
Newberry has been vigorous in meeting the demands of the “No Child Left Behind” (NCLB) legislation. We have established a kindergarten acceleration program, a Response to Instruction and Intervention initiative, an after-school tutorial program, participate in a District-wide technology initiative, and promote a strong parent involvement campaign. Additionally, members of our faculty conduct parent workshops throughout the school year focusing on reading, writing, and math.
