The Norfolk Public Schools Foundation was established in 1991 to support the activities of the Norfolk Public Schools. It is governed by a board of directors that is comprised of representatives of the community and a representative of the Norfolk Public Schools Board of Education. An annual meeting is held on the fourth Monday of January when officers are elected. Board meetings are held at least quarterly. The Superintendent of Schools and the Associate Superintendent for Business Services serve in an ex-officio capacity. The daily operations of the foundation are directed by a part-time Executive Director.
Grants are awarded each year to staff for experimental and innovative projects that cannot be funded through regular budget sources. Funds are generated from an annual Sponsorship Campaign, staff contributions and other monies specifically designated for this program. All projects must be consistent with the mission, goals and objectives of the Norfolk Public Schools and approved by the building administrator prior to submission for funding. Selection of recipients is made by a sub-committee of the Foundation Board of Directors. These grants have totaled approximately $15,000 annually since 1995.
Scholarships for post -secondary education are given to graduating seniors. Awards are based on need, academic performance and other criteria established by the donor. In 2006, the Foundation gave nearly $28,000 to students to pursue additional learning opportunities.
The Foundation staff is available to assist with alumni activities. A Norfolk Public Schools Alumni Directory was published in 1995 and 2000. An updated version is currently being completed. It will be available in July 2007 in both hard copy and on-line version.
