The new North Union Elementary was dedicated on August 21, 2004 and opened for students on September 7, 2004. Combining students from Claibourne-Richwood, Jackson, and Leesburg-Magnetic Elementary schools resulted in a population of approximately 680 students in grades PreK through five. Forty-three highly qualified teachers and 26 support staff all work to create a learning environment for the district’s youngest students. Elementary classes are all self-contained for the core curriculum with students attending art, music, P.E., computer lab, and library on a rotating schedule . The focus at the elementary level is on development of strong literacy (reading and writing) skills. This is accomplished through the use of a balanced K-5 literacy program. Students also receive instruction in mathematics, science, and social studies to align with Ohio’s content standards.
