About the School:
Poteet is located at the junction of farm road 476 and state highway 16, the city of Poteet is twenty miles south of San Antonio in north central Atascosa County. The city derived it’s name in 1886 from the area’s blacksmith and first postmaster, Francis Marion Poteet. This rural community is most know as the “Strawberry Capital of Texas” and celebrates this distinction every April with the Strawberry Festival. Poteet is a farming community with a population of 3,200.
Poteet ISD servers the surrounding community with 4 schools, Poteet Elementary (Pre-K-3), Intermediate Campus (4-6), Jr. High School (7-8), High School (9-12), and Poteet ACES. Approximately 1700 students are served throughout the district’s 17.5 sq miles. Eighty-two percent (82%) of the district’s student population is Hispanic. Seventy percent (70%) of the student population is from low-income families. All of the district campuses are school-wide Title I campuses. Fifty-four percent (54%) of the students are identified as at-risk. The district employs 129 teachers at the four campuses. In addition, there are 47 instructional aides.
