Providence Baptist Church

1773 Hawthorne Avenue
404-209-1423

Providence Baptist Church was founded on the fourth Sunday of March, 1883 by Dr. E. R. Carter and four members from Friendship Baptist Church.  It was originally named Brownsville Baptist Church because Brownsville was the name of South Atlanta at that time.  The name was later changed to South Atlanta Baptist Church, and eventually, at the suggestion of Deacon C.W. Holland, to Providence Baptist Church.

Rev. Hardy Curry was the first pastor of Providence Baptist Church, however it was Rev. H.W. White who encouraged to the church to move from Maury Avenue and Lansing Street to 61 Bisbee Avenue.   After Rev. White, Rev. Warren G. Parsons, Sr. served faithfully as pastor until his passing in January of 1985.  Our present pastor, Rev. Charles E. Nesbitt, Jr., joined us in June of 1985. Under Pastor Nesbitt’s leadership, Providence experienced growth; and in 1998 moved from Bisbee Avenue to our current facility on Hawthorne Avenue in College Park.

Since then, Pastor Nesbitt’s commitment to Providence, to young people, and to the community has been unwavering. Our Christian Education curriculum, the growth and expansion of the Youth and Young Adult Ministries, the adoption of the College Park Heath Care Center, and our Annual Community Fall Festival are but a few examples of his ongoing efforts bring to our congregation into a closer relationship with God, and to move the church “beyond the walls” by sharing the gospel and the love of Jesus Christ with our brothers and sisters wherever they are.  May God be praised!
