On September 1, 1901, some folks met "in Christ," and Quitman Baptist Church was organized. In that meeting were B.J. Smart, S.w. Jones, S.W. Simm, and J.B. Carr. After organizing as a church, the following believers came forward as charter members: Deacon J.L. Thomas, Jane Thomas, Callie Thomas, J.M. Nash, J.W. Nash, J.M. Tinsley, C.N. Sizemore, and Mrs. C.N. Sizemore.
Quitman Baptist church was first called Sardis Missionary Baptist Church. Their first order of business was a church conference to call a pastor and elect a church clerk. S.W. Jones was called as pastor and T.W. Nash was elected as the church clerk. Later, a fire destroyed many of the early records.
The name was changed to Quitman Baptist Church and affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. The first building was erected in 1904 and was replaced in 1968 with the present sanctuary. The education building was later added, in 1975.
Today, Quitman Baptist Church is a changing church. Through the leadership of God's spirit we pray that we might be a progressive church; finding new and effective ways to share the message that has been preached for ages past: The Gospel of Jesus Christ. With new technology being integrated into church life, and new ministries coming "online" each day; we pray that you will join us in carrying the joyous Gospel of Jesus Christ unto the Quitman area, Jackson Parish, Louisiana, the United States, and into the world.
