Rabun County Elementary School was built on 45.25 acres of land donated by the U.S. Forest Service in 2002. The land grant, which saved local taxpayers between $500,000 and $750,000, was the first in the U.S. under the Educational Land Grant Act.
The new school's classrooms have telephones, outside doors, sinks and water fountains, a television and Gateway computers. The classrooms also have the technology to display the Internet on television monitors.
The school is color coded with different colored lines to distinguish one hallway from another. Teachers were included as a part of the decision-making process during construction. They had input on what they would like to have in their classrooms.
