The Rockingham County Historical Society, Inc. was established in 1954. The Society maintains the Wright Tavern and a historic post office building in Wentworth as their office and meeting headquarters.
The Society members aid in the preservation of the county's written, oral, and architectural heritage of various municipal historic preservation groups. They serve to catalog and maintain the Rockingham County Historical Collections housed in the Gerald B. James Library at Rockingham Community College. The Historical Society was instrumental in the establishment of the historical village at Rockingham Community College and for many years has co-sponsored the Folk Festival, an annual event showcasing the county's unique agricultural, industrial and cultural heritage through exhibits and living history demonstrations.
The Society also provides support for genealogists in several ways including: answering queries in the newsletter, sponsoring genealogy workshops, providing support to the Genealogy Collection at the Madison Branch of the Rockingham County Public Library and to help discover lost cemeteries.
