History Of St. Peter's

St. Peter's was originally established in 1724 as a "Chapel of Ease," and known as "Goddard's Chapel" in Stepney Parish. Subsequently, the chapel was also known as the "Head of the River Chapel," "Wicomico Chapel" and "Salisbury Chapel." Eventually, the chapel took its present name, St. Peter's Church.

The first church building was constructed at the present site in 1772, and destroyed by fire in 1860. The second St. Peter's was built in 1862. Undamaged bricks from the first church were incorporated into the new church building. In 1879, Salisbury Parish was created and St. Peter's became the Parish Church.

The second church building was burned in the "Great Salisbury Fire" of 1886. Construction of the present church building was commenced in June, 1887, with bricks from the first and second churches being used in the foundation.

The first service in the present church building was a celebration of the Holy Eucharist at 6.00 a.m. Christmas Day, 1887.
