History:
After World War I, Sandston Elementary School began in an effort to serve the educational needs of the children of the Sandston community.
A hospital which served a U.S. Army post was located on the northeast corner of Naglee Avenue and Union Street. After the war this hospital building became the village school and a central meeting place for community affairs and church groups.
A large auditorium was at the center of the building with rooms surrounding it. Although it was a wooden structure, fire was not considered a threat because each classroom had its own exit to the outside with a ramp leading up to the doors. This building was used until 1939, when the original part of the present school was built.
The first PTA was organized on 1934.
The cornerstone of the new Sandston Elementary School was laid in 1938. The new school was a brick structure housing twelve classrooms, including an infirmary, a cafeteria, and an auditorium large enough to seat 600 people. Since its completion, two additions have been made---one in 1951 and another in 1955. A new physical education/multipurpose building was added to the site in January of 2002. Most recently, a major renovation was completed in the spring of 2003 to the main building.
During the years of World War II and those immediately after, there were many changes. A great emphasis was placed on patriotism. At Sandston Elementary School many patriotic activities were held, and the lunch program was expanded to increase lunches served daily from 45 to 150. In 1950-51, the first and second grades were on two daily shifts due to enlarged enrollment. Four additional classrooms were added to accommodate this enlarged enrollment. In the fall of 1951, a temporary steel building which housed two classrooms, was brought from Glen Allen High School. This building was later made into one large room which was used as a physical education room. In 1955, a new wing, including a cafeteria, was completed and permanent seats were installed in the auditorium. In May of 1977, the auditorium, library and administrative offices were destroyed by fire as a result of lightening striking one of the chimneys at the front of the building. The auditorium was remodeled and the library was moved. It was built in the rear portion of the auditorium. The former library became the resource room. Due to the efforts of all, the students missed only one day of school!
Sandston Elementary has been comprised of kindergarten through fifth grade until school year 2007-2008 when the first 4 year program was opened through the funding from the Virginia Preschool Initiative. We continue to sponsor a preschool program through funding from Federal Programs. With all that we offer, Sandston Elementary continues to proudly serve its community and add to its already rich history.
