Summit Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania was incorporated on March 29, 1854. Bonny Brook is the name of Summit Township's oldest village settlement and it is here that the early pioneers built their cabins. When Abraham Brinker moved out here from Butler, a post office was established by the name of Brinker's Mills, and in 1868, the post office became known as Bonnie Brook, with Henry Gummper, a general merchant, as postmaster. Herman Station became the successor of Bonny Brook and 1894, the Dittmer store and railroad depot, and the old Herman House, with a few buildings, constituted the town. Since those early years, Summit has grown to include two schools, Summit Township Elementary School and St. Mary's School. Along with the residential growth, agriculture and industry have played an important part in the Township's development.
