Swatara Township, Lebanon County has a population of 4,555 people, as of the 2010 Census. Located in the northern part of Lebanon County, in southcentral Pennsylvania, Swatara is a predominately rural community with small urbanized areas located along two branches of the Swatara Creek, after which it is named. The Township was incorporated in 1813 from land derived from Bethel and Hanover Townships and the name Swatara is based upon an Iroquois word meaning ‘The Place of Eels’.

The Township stretches over 21.3 square miles or 13,645 acres, including 640 acres of State Game Land and 2000 acres are within the Swatara Gap State Park Projects. The Township is bordered on the south by North Lebanon Township, on the southwest by North Annville Township, on the west and the north by Union Township and on the east by Bethel Township. The Swatara Creek is the Western border between Swatara and Union Townships.

Swatara Township is a Township of the Second Class, governed by an elected three member Board of Supervisors. Township meetings are the Second Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. The Township Office is open weekdays to meet the needs of the residents.
