80th Annual Historic Garden Week in Ashland, VA - Saturday, April 20, 2013 - 10 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. This year's tour, 'From Gentleman's Farm to the Present,' features 4 country properties, a church, and flower demonstrations.
The two flower demonstrations are complimentary to ticket holders: 1) David Pippin at Kenwood United Methodist Church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2) Mary Claire Coster at 'Tufton' from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. (see addresses below)
'Bella Terra', 11019 Old Washington Hwy, Glen Allen, VA 23059 - a 2006 French Colonial home with Italian influence, which sits on 8.5 acres on Thomas Mill Pond on the Chickahominy River. This 3-storey, 10,000 square foot home has a French gourmet kitchen and a master suite with a 3-way fireplace.
'Old Elmont School', 11174 Elmont Road, Ashland, VA 23005 - A former 1911's 4-room elementary school, this property is now home to two classics teachers. The foyer features bead board wainscoting and a school desk dating to the early 1900's. Artwork by local artists fills the walls. Cottage and shade gardens invite the visitor to linger.
'Kenwood', 11179 Elmont Road, Ashland, VA 23005 - This house, built in 1885, stands on 19 acres. The Queen Anne sytle house is a 2-storey weatherboard with decorative tin panels and a gingerbread proch. The original semi-detached kitchen remains at the rear of the house. The home is furnished with 19th century antiques, many of which are family heirlooms.
Kenwood United Methodist Church, 11208 Elmont Road, Ashland, VA 23005 - Kenwood Church was founded in 1891. A buffet prepared by the ladies of the church will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $15/person in the church social hall. Reservations should be made by April 15, 2013. 'Tufton', 13077 Cedar Lane, Ashland, VA 23005 - This house, built in 1970, features a black walnut stiarcase, limestone foyer, and beams salvaged from the 'Lucky Strike' warehouse in Richmond, Many treasures are displayed throughout the house including pharmaceutical bottles from an old family drug store in Ashland.
