The Luce school

45 Independence Street
781-821-5075

The Luce school opened its doors in 1954 for children in grades Kindergarten through eight. It was named after Dr. Dean Sherwood Luce, who was a nationally noted physician.
Dr. Luce came to Canton when he married Ethal M. Bense in 1905. He started a medical practice here and thus began his long tenure as the village doctor. He was known as the "horse and buggy" physician often seen traveling through the streets of Canton at all hours of the day and night to tend to his patients. His patients were more than just people he took care of. He considered them his family and treated them as such.

Dr. Luce was a very active member of the Canton Community. He served as a trustee of the library, was a member of the Canton Board of Health and served as the school doctor and team physician for over twenty five years.
