Chartered in 1887 and occupying approximately 2.4 square miles of land, the Town of Clover is located in northwestern York County, South Carolina. Clover is a quiet and peaceful community rich in history and antiques shopping.

The town officially began around the site of a 5,000-gallon water tank constructed to serve the steam engines of the Chester and Lenoir Railroad Narrow Gauge Railroad. According to a legend, excess water spilling on the ground caused patches of clover to spring up. Residents affectionately referred to the town as Clover Patch. Shortly after, the town became a booming textile community. The town has since grown steadily, reaching a population of 4,014 in 2000.

Clover was first settled by the descendants of the Scotch-Irish. In celebration of its heritage, Clover residents host the annual Feis Chlobhair, or a Clover Kinntra Festival, the second week of June. Bagpipes are played, haggis is eaten, cabers are tossed, and everyone has a good time. Clover's sister city in Northern Ireland is Larne in County Antrim.

The small town atmosphere combined with easy access to big city dining, shopping and entertainment make Clover an exceptional place to live. The proximity of Clover to the rapidly growing Charlotte and Gastonia, N.C., and Rock Hill, S.C., urban areas provides a job market and creates external pressures for growth which are beginning to be felt.

The Town of Clover is strategically located within driving distance to Charlotte, N.C., and Rock Hill, S.C. Clover citizens have access to big city amenities while preserving a small hometown quality of life.

The Town of Clover was incorporated in 1887 and has a growing population of 4,014, according to the 2000 Census. Clover's legislative structure operates under a council form of government composed of a mayor and a six member council elected at large.

The day-to-day municipal operations are managed by the town administrator, who is appointed by Town Council. The administrator supervises five department heads responsible for Public Safety, Water and Sewer, Streets and Sanitation, Recreation, Fire Protection and Building Inspection.
