History:

The Town of Lowell was founded in 1852 by Melvin Halsted.  He built a flour mill which was pivitol to the economy of South Lake County.  Halsted named his new village Lowell because its milling industries resembled the New England town of Lowell, Massachusetts.  He also constructed a church, brick schoolhouse, and the first brick house in the Lowell area with 400,000 bricks burned from his own kiln.  Melvin and his family moved in to the house in the spring of 1850.  The house, which has been restored by the Three Creeks Historical Association, stands at the corner of Main and Halsted Streets.  It is open to the public as a museum.

The Lowell Labor Day Parade is the oldest, consecutive running parade in the State of Indiana.
