For those born and raised in Southwest Harbor, the changes in the town over the years has been dramatic. At the same time, much of what makes Southwest Harbor special has remained constant throughout the years. For those of us from away, those constants are why we chose Southwest Harbor as our home.

The beauty of the land and sea are just two of those constants. Our lovely protected harbor, forested hillsides, and rocky shores are here for everyone to enjoy. But the character of the town also contributes to the beauty and uniqueness of Southwest Harbor. There may be more pleasure boats in the harbor than fifty years ago, but the harbor remains a working harbor, with much of the town's economy based on marine-related activity. For many years Southwest Harbor has been home to many fine boatbuilders, and the fishing industry and related services have traditionally been the heart of Southwest Harbor. As tourism and land-based commercial uses have grown, marine-related activity has provided the year-round base for the town's thriving economy.

So much of southwest Harbor's character is based on those who live here. The town is known for its skilled craftsmen, dedicated workers, innovative business people, caring teachers, and townspeople who truly care about their neighbors and their town. The town has a wealth of people who take the time to volunteer their services to the schools, community organizations, and the Town, making Southwest Harbor an even better place to live and work.
