History

Wellsville is Located in the Genesee River Valley of Southwestern New York State. The first settlement Dates back to 1795. Land, once Seneca Indian hunting ground, became predominantly agricultural during the early to late 1800's. 

The Town of Wellsville became a stop for the Erie Railroad in 1851 on its way from the Hudson River to Lake Erie. Although Wellsville has a rich history of oil and timber, it was the railroad that helped Wellsville to grow and officially become a Town in 1855. 

The first town meeting was held the following year on March, 4, 1856 at the home of Harmon Vanburen. Wellsville was named after a predominant land owner of the time named Gardner Wells. Wells later moved to Belfast, NY and then to Friendship where he is buried. The Town of Wellsville has only one Village in its boundaries. The Village of Wellsville was incorporated in 1858.
