About Us:
Government - The Twp of Washington, Bergen County is a Faulkner Plan E form of government with an elected mayor and 5 council members.
Population - We are primarily a residential community, with limited commercial and business development. At the present time, our population is approximately 9000.
Transportation - Due to our close proximity to New York City, there are various public transportation options for the commuter. There are both New Jersey Transit buses (165) and trains (in nearby Westwood) that run on a regular basis to New York City. We also provide senior citizen and people with disabilities a Van Service.
Houses of Worship - There are several religious institutions in the community, including a Catholic Church, Baptist Church, Reformed Jewish Congregation , Assemblies of God Church and a Bible church. There are also additional houses of worship in neighboring towns such as an ELCA Lutheran Church in Woodcliff Lake a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church and K-8 school in Westwood. There is a larger Catholic Church and K-8 school in Hillsdale as well as another Catholic Church in Westwood.
Schools - The Township of Washington has a consolidated school system with our neighboring town, Westwood - with elementary schools in both towns and the Jr./Sr. High School located in the Township.There is also a Catholic Girls' High School, Immaculate Heart Academy in the Township - this is one of the five outstanding Parochial High Schools in Bergen County.
Public Library - The Township also has their own public library located behind the Washington Town Center at 144 Woodfield Rd.
Parks & Recreation - We have several parks and recreation programs in town including baseball and softball for children and adults in the spring through early summer.
Local Stores - We have a centrally located and convenient shopping center in the community (Washington Town Center), which includes a Foodtown (Nicholas Markets), a movie theater, a Rite Aid drugstore, Amir Jewelry, David's Bagels, Subway, Dunkin Donuts, Originals Pizza, Fantastic Sam's Hair Salon, a dry cleaners, stationery store, dance school and many other small stores and eateries which serve the basic needs of residents. In many cases you can walk to this area, however, from outlying parts of the Township a car is far more convenient.
Post Office - The Twp. of Washington has it's own post office located in the rear of the Washington Town Center on Pascack Rd.
Newsletter - The residents of the Township are also provided with a newsletter that is published and mailed about six times a year called "The Citizen". We post all editions on line for your convenience.
