History
According to historians, history may be written or unwritten. Historians further state that history is the story of what man has said or done. The story of Trinity AME Church is what our Christian brothers and sisters have said or done.
A segment of Trinity's history is unwritten since it was organized as a prayer and praise group at he home of Mrs. Axie Bryant on Gammon Avenue in South Atlanta. For several years, Mrs. Bryant was the only Stewardess. The exact date is unknown but the late Mrs. Emma Jackson remembered hearing her mother tell about those early years. Trinity has been a leader in the South Atlanta and Southwest Atlanta community for over 100 years.
In the early years of Trinity's history, many great ministers were sent to Trinity--too numerous to mention names. They gave dynamic leadership along with a sense of loyalty for The making of a great Trinity.
Rev. Preston Williams became our 27th pastor in October 1967. He came to Trinity with a dream. He exhibited dynamic leadership along with a sense of loyalty and devotion to the mission of the church. Because of all the God given gifts during Rev. Williams' pastorate, we were able to purchase our present edifice and open the Trinity A.ME. Day Care and Early Learning Center.
Rev. S. W Wicker was Trinity's 28th pastor. Under his leadership, Trinity grew in membership and in the number of church organizations. Our Day Care Center greatly improved and became fully certified.
Dr. A.J Richardson became our 29th pastor. During Rev. Richardson's pastorate over three hundred members united with us. Property was acquired, three choirs and two usher boards were organized and church attendance increased.
In 1979, Trinity was graced with the spectacular leadership of Rev. G.S. Hardeman, The son of a former pastor of Trinity. Rev. Hardeman recreated the Sunday Nursery, appointed a Junior Pastor and organized a Junior Church Choir "The Ellis Ensemble." He created a Board of Directors for the Day Care Center. Fire doors and two furnaces were installed in the Center; and new carpeting and a Communion Room were installed in the Sanctuary. In addition, graveled parking spaces were made available for worshipers.
Rev. Morrie L. Hood was sent to Trinity in June 1982. Under Rev. Hood's administration, many installations and renovations took place in needed areas of our church. The Young Adult Choir and the Young People 's Department were reorganized.
Our 35th pastor, the late Rev. T Leander Mency, came to us in July 1983 and served us until his demise in March1988. Under Rev. Mency's leadership, several accomplishments were made. New choir robes for the Adult, Young Adult, and Children's Choirs were purchased. The first Commodore computer was secured for the Day Care Center.
The Church mortgage of seventeen years was liquidated more than fifty members were added to the membership roster and the upstairs education rooms were remodeled. The parking area was also completed.
Rev. Jeffery B. Cooper, our present pastor came to us in June 1988. Under his administrative ministry and vision, Trinity has received a much needed face lift. The entire edifice has been completely remodeled.
