History:
In February, 1982, Jeff Walker packed his Toyota and headed
for Palm Springs with one hundred dollars in his pocket and a sense of purpose
in his heart. Victory Christian Center (VCC) began in the living room of Connie
Diaz that month and, after a year, had grown to fourteen people. "I remember
calling my dad and giving him the details of the church's one year development.
Upon hearing the news, he offered to send me money to come home. Funny thing
was, I thought I was doing great!" Walker recalls with a deep laugh. "All I knew
was I was to 'Go to Palm Springs and start a church.'"
In the first eight years of ministry, church growth dictated changes in rented
facilities in Cathedral City. We moved from a small building on Commercial Road
to the Alpha Beta Shopping Center at Date Palm and Highway 111, then the Gas
Company building on Kieley Road (interspersed with short stints at the Cathedral
City Presbyterian Church, Nellie Coffman Middle School and a Palm Springs movie
theatre), while church offices moved from Perez Road to 33rd Street. Land on Bob
Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage began to be acquired in 1985, eventually totaling
the eleven acres the church holds today. In 1990, the first building was
completed. Since then, a church office building, the combination Fellowship
Hall/Classroom expansion, and the //oneighty Youth building have been added.
The ministry of VCC has flourished in the desert and, today, calls for three
Sunday morning services in addition to the evening and midweek services. The
church offers extensive small group ministry as well as adult, youth and
children's programs. Outreach ministry includes missions in more than
twenty-five countries around the world, our Bread of Life Food Bank, Assisted
Living, Prison and children's ministries as well as several seasonal community
outreaches.
As a life-long learner, Dr. Walker is passionate about educational opportunities
for both the congregation and the community. Victory Christian Preschool is a
year-round state licensed facility while Victory Christian Academy provides
educational opportunities to students from kindergarten to 5th grade. Our goal
is to provide a Christ-centered environment and curriculum that nurtures a
child's spiritual, intellectual, and physical growth and development. Southern
California Christian College celebrates more than twenty years of equipping
adults to fulfill their God-ordained destiny and preparing leaders for a life of
learning and effective ministry.
As a result of tremendous church growth and leader preparation, VCC has had the
opportunity to plant several churches in Southern California. Victory Christian
Center of Yucca Valley has recently celebrated eleven years of ministry in the
high desert. Spirit & Truth Worship Center in 29 Palms and Victory Christian
Center of Los Angeles located in Glendale, whose Senior Pastors are graduates of
Southern California Christian College, are the most recent churches added to the
Victory family.
