St. Nazianz has a very unique and interesting history. Located in southwestern Manitowoc County, it was founded in 1854 by Father Ambrose Oschwald and a group of settlers from Germany. Because the patron of their Association was St. Gregory of Nazianz, they named the village St. Nazianz and the church St. Gregory’s. Inspired by the early Christian community, members of the Association shared everything in common. Their effective and saintly leader, Fr. Oschwald, urged the settlers to "do everything to promote the welfare of their neighbors."
The spirit of concern for others can still be found in the heart of this vibrant community. St. Nazianz has an outstanding volunteer fire department and a medical First Responders unit. Active service organizations as well as veteran, youth and senior citizen groups exist. A nutrition program and Red Cross Rolling Wheels are also available. Health care and hospitals are within a short drive.
Education is provided by St. Gregory’s Catholic School and the Valders Area School District. Colleges and technical schools are within commuting distance.
Recreational opportunities available include fishing, hunting, boating, hiking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Oschwald Park offers summer picnic sites and areas for softball and tennis.
The St. Nazianz Historical Society helps preserve historical buildings such as the 1893 George Washington School, severely damaged in the May 2000 tornado-like storm. Three 19th century buildings are listed in the State of Wisconsin Historical Records—St. Gregory’s Church, St. Mary’s Convent (now Maria Haus) and the Loretta Chapel. In addition, the Historical Society collects photos and artifacts and promotes the fascinating heritage of "Das Settlement."
St. Nazianz was incorporated as a village in 1956. Water and sewer utilities were installed in the early 1960s; the sewage treatment plant was rebuilt in 1980. Cable TV came on the scene in 1990. A 60-acre development site is available for business and residential interests.
