Walkup Heritage Farm And Garden
The Walkup Heritage Farm & Gardens is located at the historic "Walkup House" in Crystal Lake, Illinois. The farm had been in the family since 1835 when it was sold in 1972 following my grandparents' deaths. My wife, Carolyn, who is a nationally known food writer and former member of the prestigious James Beard Committee, and I reacquired it in 1997 from the people who had bought it from my grandparents' estate.

The house, which is built out of approximately 70,000 cobblestones hauled 40 miles to the site from Lake Michigan in oxcarts, had been built by my great, great grandfather, the first settler in the township, in 1856. It has been designated an historic site by the McHenry County Historic Preservation Commission.
