Church Theme: "Developing a Caring, Sharing, Fruit-Bearing Church"
Vision: We are a Christ-centered, Bible-based, Holy Spirit-led church. We are a diverse church committed to kingdom-building through effective holistic ministries. Through our holistic approach, we are committed to exalting Christ as Lord and Savior, equipping the saints for effective ministries, educating and empowering humanity to fulfill their God given destiny as holistic individuals.
Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
This great commission was the seed that was planted in hearts and minds of a small group of people in Una, Tennessee 115 years ago. From this spiritual conception came the birth of Watson Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
Watson Grove Baptist Church was organized and built in Una, Tennessee in 1889. Una was a very small community, and there were only a few people of either the Baptist or the Methodist faith. Both denominations desired and needed a place to worship because neither congregation was financially able to acquire and maintain a building alone. A cooperative agreement was agreed upon, which provided a mutual church home for both denominations, permitting each of them to alternate Sundays for worship service and on the fifth Sundays, they united for worship.
The name Watson Grove was selected by the Baptist worshippers of this congregation in honor of one of its members, Mrs. N. Watson. She realized the desire and need of her fellow members for a place to worship and offered a lot for a building site. Due to the racial barriers of that time there was some opposition to the church being located on that particular site and another site was selected. As a token of appreciation for Mrs. Watson's generosity and commitment, the church was named Watson Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
Our first church was a very small frame structure in a rural setting. Due to the circumstances in the small dwindling community, there was little or no numerical growth, however, there was spiritual abundance.
In order to meet the worship service need of each member of our congregation, an early morning service was established. This service became a reality in October 1993. The 8:00 A.M. Service and Choir (Soul Stirrers) was formed in 1994. Outstanding officers during this era were the late Deacons H.D. Barnes, Thomas Huggins, and Albert Lee. We shall forever cherish their memory. In 1993, the church continued to expand with the purchase of two apartment complexes, which extend the church property to include the entire block facing Horton Street. Also in 1993, the church purchased new printing equipment and established a computerized record system.
The church continues to expand with Building Fund Program and the construction of a new church. On Sunday, March 7, 2004 the ground breaking ceremony to rebuild the grove.
Rev. Goodwin presently serves as Moderator of the Nashville City Missionary Baptist District Association and President of the Congress of Christian Workers Tennessee Missionary Baptist State Congress.
Watson Grove is truly blessed to have Rev. Curtis W. Goodwin, his lovely wife Bernice, and their sons Curtis Jr., Corey, and Chris as part of our church family. We are enriched by their concern for the welfare of the community and commitment to the up building of God's kingdom. We pray this will be a lasting relationship for us all.
