Our Mission:
The White House Cyber Library is owned and operated by a group of public citizens located in White House, Tennessee. This library is not affiliated with any department of state or federal government nor any public library, corporation or business.
This library is designed and operated the way we believe Ben Franklin would have liked. We started building this library "from the ground up", and will add access to new information sites as often as possible. Once we become aware of an educational site, we will review it and determine if it meets our "acquisition standards".
Our hope is that other towns and state governments will promote the building of similar libraries and that someday access to all such libraries will be provided through a World Wide Library (WWL).
We want to provide connection to sites that have reliable educational value. We are not interested in sites that are predominantly commercial in nature. Eventually, we hope to be a first-stop choice for people beginning an educational or research journey and who don't want to be limited to the imperfect indexing and acquisition methods used by most search engines (See our "History and Statement of Beliefs" section). We hope to organize this library similarly to traditional libraries of yesteryear, where information reviews were based on critical thinking and discrimination.
We are excited about building this library and offering it as a place where you can gain access to educational information, without all the commercial and seductive distractions of the World Wide Web. Our current building plan involves creating a "Focus Department" every 12 months or so. We will concentrate our building efforts in the Focus Department, and will work hard to stock the shelves there. We will spend any extra time we have to review sites for other Departments. However, they probably will not be reviewed and posted as quickly as those received in our Focus Department.
Our first "Focus Department" is "Science". If you have any favorite science sites please let us know so we can share them with others (go to "Contact Us"). In your e:mail, please give a few brief details about the type(s) of sites you are providing (ie, biology, zoology, astronomy, chemistry, etc). We are particularly interested in sites that (a) have well referenced materials (ie, a bibliography), (b) are known to exist at a reliable (ie, permanent) Internet address and (c) are associated with a reputable or well known academic establishment or organization. Thank you.
