OUR MISSION & HISTORY
YMCA of Greater Houston sleep away camping dates back to 1910, when a group of 75 boys from eight Bible classes enjoyed their outings at Rollover on Bolivar Peninsula. It was an ideal location for camp offering swimming, beach areas for play and fishing. This first experience in camping turned into two 10-day camping sessions, and YMCA camping in Houston was born.
Through the years, the camping venues have changed, but the character values of the YMCA; caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith, remained and continue to be taught to hundreds of children each summer.
The mission of the YMCA: To put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
