Cortland County Historical Society is a non-profit organization chartered by New YorkState to operate a museum. The SuggettHouseMuseum and the KelloggMemorialResearchCenter at 25 Homer Ave. occupy the beautiful former home of James Suggett, inventor and real estate developer, and a climate-controlled wing, respectively. The two areas contain a treasure trove of CortlandCounty history ranging from historical artifacts such as clothing, furniture, and paintings to tens of thousands of documents, newspaper articles, and vital statistics (births, deaths, and marriages). The SuggettHouseMuseum features vignettes of interior spaces from 1825-1900 showcasing furnishings and artifacts from CortlandCounty families. Our recently renovated military exhibit features local soldiers’ memorabilia from the War of 1812 to the Vietnam War. The KelloggMemorialResearchCenter is truly the best kept secret in CortlandCounty for genealogical research. We have census and cemetery records, hundreds of genealogical studies contributed by local families, photographs, diaries, letters, maps, and more.
