Ryan James Tedford, MD



After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with high honors in biochemistry, Dr. Ryan Tedford attended medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA). He completed his internal medicine training, including an additional year as an assistant chief of service, cardiology fellowship, and advanced heart failure and transplant training, at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He joined the faculty in 2011, and was promoted to associate professor after just five years. He is board certified in cardiovascular diseases and advanced heart failure and transplantation, and has been elected as a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association. He previously served as the medical director of mechanical circulatory support and director of cardiovascular hemodynamics at Johns Hopkins until he was recruited to be the chief of heart failure and medical director of cardiac transplantation at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. He is a professor of medicine/cardiology, and also directs the advanced heart failure and transplant fellowship training program at MUSC. He holds the Dr. Peter C. Gazes Endowed Chair in Heart Failure. Dr. Tedford is an internationally recognized clinical researcher and has published over 150 peer-reviewed original research manuscripts, invited expert reviews, editorials, and book chapters. His research efforts are focused on hemodynamic assessment of the right ventricle function and its interaction with the pulmonary circulation and left heart. This research spans the fields of pulmonary hypertension, left heart disease, exercise physiology, systemic sclerosis, and mechanical circulatory support. He has also served as the site principal investigator for multiple clinical trials including the NIH-sponsored Heart Failure Clinical Trial Network. He participates on several scientific advisory boards, clinical trial steering committees, and serves as a hemodynamic core laboratory for clinical pharmaceutical trials. ,Dr. Tedford is a regular invited faculty lecturer at national and international scientific meetings, peer reviewer for numerous journals, and serves as a Section Editor for the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation and on the editorial board for Circulation: Heart Failure, JACC: Heart Failure, and CHEST. He has accepted organizational leadership roles working on the program planning committees for the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, Heart Failure Society of America, and the American College of Cardiology, and was an invited task force member of the 2018 World Symposium on Pulmonary Hypertension. Dr. Tedford is a dedicated educator, regularly participating in the teaching and mentoring of medical students, residents, and fellows as well as lecturing at national and international continuing medical education events.
