In April 1990, a casual conversation between two friends launched Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas. After nearly three years of planning and joined by 18 community minded non-profit organizations, the highly successful first event was held in February, 1993. It is hailed by many as perhaps one of the largest reunions held in Southeast Texas.
The mission envisioned by the founders was simple and straightforward:
-Benefit the member non-profit groups that provide services to Southeast Texas
-Stage a family-oriented affair that Southeast Texas would be proud of.
-Promote interaction among diverse ethnic groups while promoting racial harmony
-To serve as an economic development project for Southeast Texas.
Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas, Inc. received its non-profit Charter from the State of Texas on February 18, 1992 and the non-profit status was confirmed by the Internal Revenue Service. MGSETX is a Non-profit 501-C-4 organization. Funds are donated to the member organization each year which benefits the citizens of Southeast Texas. MGSETX is a volunteer organization and no salaries are paid. The event operates with a volunteer base of over 750 volunteers each year.
In 1993, the Retail Merchants Credit Association constructed and donated the use of a 1600 square foot facility to serve as the Mardi Gras Operations center, which also houses the Mardi Gras Store. Staffed by volunteers and proceeds benefits member organizations. The Mardi Gras Store has something for everyone. If it’s purple, green and gold, glitters or shines, looks gaudy but fun, it’s at the only official Mardi Gras Store in Southeast Texas!
